My pharmacy rotation to the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest combines on-campus study with a field program. I will have classes in ethnobotany, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, and toxicology at the National Institute for Traditional Medicine and workshops at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon’s Institute of Research. We will also take a five-day journey down the Amazon River to visit various tribes and lodge at the gallery of internationally renowned artist, Francisco Grippa.
"Travel is more than the seeing of sights. It is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living."
-Miriam Beard, 1901-1983, writer
The day is almost here!! I intend to get no worms or other sickness during my time in Peru. This week I started my first round of anti-malarial medication. I received all the vaccines necessary earlier this year. Now, all I need is a doxycycline script for prophylaxis of Leptospirosis--necesary because there has been a recent outbreak from flooding.
I know you're confused because I am holding a book. School is over so that means no more homework, right? Wrong! The following readings were my pre-trip assignments:- Looking For Mr. Guevara, by Barbara Brodman (my preceptor)
- Synopsis: Barbara became the first person to retrace Che Guevara's legendary 1952 journey through South America.
- Witch Doctor's Apprentice, by Nicole Maxwell
- Synopsis: Nicole relays her sole journey through the Amazon, looking for medicinal plants for a US pharmaceutical company in the mid-1900s.
- The Global Warming Answer Book, 3rd Edition, by Barbara Broadman and Steve McCrea
- The Global Awareness Institute's Action Plan for Guilt-Free Living
They were quick, interesting reads. I may not agree with everything said but they gave some good insight.
